In left-wing Basel, the U.S. flag has secretly disappeared from the Mittlere Brücke. This is creating a negative image of the city at the Rhine.
Event organizers in Basel have the opportunity to draw attention to their events by flying flags at central locations and to welcome participants to Basel.
This is stipulated in the flag-flying regulations of the Canton of Basel-Stadt, and for major international events, such as Art Basel or the Swiss Indoors, the city even flies flags at full mast.
Forlorn Flagpole
However, the Rhine metropolis’s location marketing has now taken a hit.
As research by muula.ch revealed, the U.S. flag has disappeared from the Mittlere Brücke during the international military and brass band festival, the Basel Tattoo.
The second-largest festival of its kind after the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo thus appears to be anti-American.
All other flags, including the Swiss flag, continue to fly proudly over the Rhine. Only the flagpole for the U.S. flag has been empty for a few days.
Indifference on Official Authorities
muula.ch sought clarification from official authorities regarding exactly what happened and what message this sends to the world – especially given that U.S. President Donald Trump is putting the Basel-based pharmaceutical giants Roche, Novartis, Sandy, and others through the wringer.
However, neither the cantonal government nor the Office of the President nor the Department of Justice and Security initially responded to our media inquiries.
Not even the city’s marketing office or the Basel Tattoo music festival commented on the incident.
This indifference suggests to the public that the disappearance of the U.S. flag is apparently not all that unwelcome in the left-leaning Basel.
Quality controls are lacking
Only slowly – like the old slow Basel Fasnacht carnival – did the Presidential Department eventually respond on Monday afternoon.
The authority stated that it could not explain the disappearance of the U.S. flag and that nothing like this had ever happened before.
Had the incident been noticed, a new U.S. flag would have been hung that very same day, according to the Office of the President of the Canton of Basel-Stadt.
So, there are apparently no procedures in place for dealing with theft.
Imprisonment or Fines
Under Swiss criminal law, however, the damage or defacement of flags is clearly regulated.
While insulting or destroying one’s own national flag is not explicitly a criminal offense, criminal law also does apply to foreign flags.
Imprisonment or fines may be imposed as long as the flags in question are officially displayed, such as those in the canton of Basel-Stadt.
Americans Participated
Strictly speaking, the disappearance of the U.S. flag could have been explained by the fact that the participants from the U.S. did not actually ever arrive, and hence, flag was therefore removed.
However, the organizers themselves had stated on Sunday that the 20th-anniversary show had concluded on Saturday evening with a festive finale.
During the festival, the audience enjoyed spectacular performances by the Blue Devils International Corps from the U.S., the legendary Red Hot Chilli Pipers, the impressive Massed Pipes & Drums, over 130 dancers from the Canadiana Celtic Highland Dancers from Canada, and the Kilgore College Rangerettes from the U.S.
So, it’s clear: The Americans were in fact there.
US Tourists Welcome
The removal of the U.S. flag in Basel thus remains a mystery that sends strange signals to the world.
After all, the city on the bend of the Rhine is more than happy to welcome the generous tourist groups from America who stroll through Basel’s Old Town every day.
Americans stook gawking at one of the world’s oldest bridges, dating back to the 13th century, without knowing that a U.S. flag once hung there.
